Die von hellenischen Motiven geprägten Gemälde und Drucke von Alekos Fassianos dienten in den Jahren nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg als Symbole der griechischen nationalen Identität. Fassianos hat in Griechenland und in großen Städten auf der ganzen Welt ausgestellt.

Seine Arbeit wurde 1971 in die Biennale von São Paulo aufgenommen, und er vertrat Griechenland 1972 auf der Biennale in Venedig. Fassianos studierte bei Yiannis Moralis an der Hochschule für Bildende Künste Athen und erhielt 1960 ein Stipendium der französischen Regierung, um sein Studium der Lithographie an der École des Beaux-Arts in Paris fortzusetzen.

Anstatt der europäischen Avantgarde nachzueifern, betrachtete er sein griechisches Erbe als Quelle künstlerischer Inspiration; sein grafischer, figurativer Stil wurde von der antiken griechischen Vasenmalerei sowie byzantinischen und volkstümlichen Kunsttraditionen inspiriert.

Fassianos’ abgeflachte, faux-naive Figuren – oft im Profil dargestellt – sind gleichzeitig zeitgenössisch und archetypisch und stellen mythische Charaktere in einer mediterranen Palette aus Blau, Ocker und Terrakotta dar.

His works have been showcased in prestigious galleries and museums worldwide, including the Paris Museum of Modern Art, the State Museum of Contemporary Art in Thessaloniki, and the National Gallery of Athens.
