Vlassis Caniaris (1928–2011) was a pioneering Greek artist known for his politically charged and socially engaged work. Born in Athens, he initially studied medicine before dedicating himself to painting. He trained at the Athens School of Fine Arts (1950–1955) and worked with Yannis Tsarouchis on stage design.

His early works explored abstraction, but by the 1960s, he transitioned to three-dimensional constructions using plaster, metal mesh, and real objects. Influenced by the Nouveaux Réalistes, he participated in the 1964 Venice Biennale and created politically significant works against the Greek dictatorship (1967–1974). In the 1970s, his Gastarbeiter-Fremdarbeiter series addressed migrant struggles in Europe.

Caniaris taught at the National Technical University of Athens and exhibited internationally, participating in major events like Documenta 6 (1977) and the 1988 Venice Biennale. His work remains influential in contemporary art discourse.
